Fishermen rescued from sunken boat off Calf of Man
Sun, 24 Nov 2019
Coastguards and RNLI crew from Port Erin, Port St Mary and Caernarfon assisted in the rescue of two fishermen whose boat had sunk off the Calf of Man.
At 6:10pm last night the crew of Port St Mary's RNLI 'Gough Ritchie 2' were paged by Belfast Coastguard to a Mayday beacon broadcast from a fishing vessel sinking rapidly, with two crew on board.
A helicopter was sent from Caernarfon to assist, along with the crew of Port Erin RNLI 'Muriel and Leslie'.
All rescue teams were informed by a nearby fishing vessel that the casualty vessel had sunk and they had recovered the men from the water.
Crew members from both Port St Mary and Port Erin lifeboats were put on board to assess the condition of the casualties.
HM Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter 936, which had arrived on scene, was stood down.
Both lifeboats then escorted the second fishing vessel back to Peel Harbour where the casualties were met by Port Erin Coastguard and paramedics, where they were found to be safe and well.
Port Erin RNLI Coxswain Mike Keggen stated that if it had not been for the casualties wearing their lifejackets and the quick response of a nearby fishing vessel, the outcome could have been very different.
