Samaritans IOM in need of Christmas volunteers
Wed, 04 Dec 2019
Samaritans Isle of Man are asking people to give the gift of listening this Christmas.
Volunteers from the mental health charity will be working around the clock this month to ensure its helpline is open 24/7 for those in need over the Christmas break.
Almost 1,650 dedicated Samaritans volunteers helped last Christmas Eve at Samaritans branches in the UK, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland.
On Christmas Day, over 1,475 Samaritans volunteers responded to people.
Each volunteer answered an average of 12 calls per Christmas shift, with callers sharing a wide range of personal challenges from mental and physical health struggles to family issues, relationship problems, isolation and loneliness.
Samaritans offers confidential judgement-free emotional support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The number is 116 123 and it is free to call. Alternatively, you can email jo@samaritans.org.
More information about volunteering opportunities can be sent by contacting samaritans@manx.net.
Lesley Moughtin of Samaritans IOM spoke to Energy FM about why people should offer to help others feel heard at Christmas:
