Police reveal Christmas period anti-drink-drive numbers
Wed, 08 Jan 2020
The Isle of Man Constabulary has revealed the number of drink driving offences reported over the Christmas period.
Between Friday 29th November 2019 to Wednesday 1st January 2020, a total of 323 vehicles were stopped during the period, with 21 drivers breath tested.
16 were arrested as a result of a positive roadside breath test, and 11 were charged to attend Court.
Three drivers were released having provided a breath test which was below the legal limit and two were bailed pending further analysis and enquiries.
Inspector Jamie Tomlinson of the Operational Support Group stated: ‘This year’s anti-drink-drive campaign has resulted in fewer arrests compared to the 2018 campaign figures which is positive and shows that our message is getting through to motorists Island wide.
'It is also very pleasing that the number of breath tests administered were significantly lower than the previous year. Our aim this year was to yet again be highly visible on the Islands roads but also to have a high profile social media campaign which was well received.
'The arrests made ranged from teenagers to the elderly which shows that people of all ages still need to be educated. It is our aim to decrease drink-drive arrests further and maintain safety on the Island's roads. I would always encourage any member of the public to report a suspected impaired driver’.
Minister for Home Affairs Bill Malarkey said: 'I’m glad to see that more people used public transport and taxis to get home this year rather than risk drinking and driving. The Roads Policing Unit remains active year-round, and will always prosecute drivers who are found to be over the legal limit. Drink-driving is totally unacceptable.’
