DOI issues Glen Rd Laxey works update

Fri, 24 Jan 2020

The Department of Infrastructure has given an update on Glen Road in Laxey following the new wall unit works.

They said that retaining units to replace demolished Manx stone are in place and all necessary service diversions and drainage installations have been carried out.

The flood gate is on order to be installed on arrival and estimated to be in around 10 weeks.

Sand-filled tote bags and flood barriers will remain in place to protect Glen Road from flooding if the river level rises.

Works will remain ongoing for the next week to face the wall with stone cladding and once finished, the site will be demobilised.

More consideration is being given to the rest of the wall to establish the most appropriate and cost-effective action that can then be planned for the summer with flooding less-likely.

Work continues to improve drainage and flow in the surrounding area.

The tributaries at the DoI depot and the old police station have been cleared and new and higher capacity drainage has been fitted to carry the water from the stream beneath Glen Road at the old police station to the existing outfall at Cumberland House.

A new surface water system fitted to separate highway drainage from the stream culvert which will help to alleviate surface water issues in the future and more minor drainage improvements outside Lewin’s Cottage will begin shortly.

Work is continuing with the design of a replacement culvert next to the DoI depot.

The river channel will also be improved and works will be included in the Manx stone walls upstream and downstream of the culvert - subject to procurement, work is scheduled to begin in late February.
