Headteacher of SNHS advises parents on NAHT 'action short of strike'

Wed, 12 Feb 2020

The Headteacher of St Ninian's High School has sent a letter to parents regarding the NAHT and NASUWT 'action short of strike action' likely to affect the school's operations.

In the letter, Headteacher Chris Coole states that the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), and the National Association of School Masters/Union Women Teachers (NASUWT) are engaged in disputes with the Department of Education Sport and Culture over teacher's pay.

He describes how from Monday 24th February, teachers will all work their contracted hours, but some will not participate in anything outside of these times.

He said: 'We have summarised the most important consequences of this first phase of classroom teacher “action short of strike” for students and their families as follows:

1. Voluntary lunchtime duties and clubs will no longer be covered, and many after school activities, including revision sessions and after school clubs, will not run.

2. Activities that have already been paid for by parents or are part of a recognised qualification, such as trips and Duke of Edinburgh Award, these will still run.

3. There will be no school sports fixtures. PE staff have confirmed that some after school activities/extra-curricular sessions will still go ahead where students are working towards a sports trip which is already booked.

4. Emails will not be responded to after the end of the working day.

5. For the moment parents’ evenings, review days and options evenings will go ahead as normal, though these may be affected if the action escalates to a second phase.

Timetabled lessons will continue as normal and students will access their full curriculum.

Students sitting external exams in the summer will continue to receive the support, guidance and expertise of their subject teachers as would normally be the case in helping them prepare for their exams.

Mr Coole concluded: 'We very much regret that this action is necessary and the impact it will have on your child. It is hoped that these issues are resolved as soon as possible. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you require further clarification. '
