People in the Isle of Man can enjoy most outdoor sports again as long as social distancing and gathering rules are followed.

A further 23 sports including cricket and athletics were able to restart this weekend, albeit with some adjustments, following the continued easing of gathering restrictions.

The Isle of Man Government has now sent Public Health approved guidance, to all governing bodies to assist the safe return of their sport and clubs are asked to work with them to develop risk assessments specific to their activity and venue. At this stage indoor venues such as gyms and swimming pools remain closed.

Dr Alex Allinson MHK, Minister for Sport, Education and Culture, said: ‘I know how important sport is to this Island and the return of so many will be a welcome boost to coaches, organisers and all those who participate. I urge clubs to be cautious and ensure those taking part are aware of the latest guidance and risks so we can continue to keep everyone safe.’

Almost all sports were stopped on 23 March to help prevent the spread of Covid-19. Pitches, tracks and tennis courts were all closed but this restriction has now been relaxed and most outdoor sports facilities can now reopen.

In line with the Government’s rules on gatherings, a maximum of 10 people - including coaches – can participate as a group and social distancing of at least two metres is required for a sport to be allowed.

The sharing of equipment is not allowed and anything that has been used during an activity must be cleaned afterward. No contact is allowed at all so team games such as rugby, football and netball must be adapted.

Anyone displaying COVID-19 symptoms, sharing a house with someone displaying symptoms, or required to self-isolate should not take part.
