Landrover driver fined for damaging wildlife habitats

The DEFA Minister hopes the successful prosecution of a 4x4 driver who caused damage to important wildlife habitats sends out a message.

 

Benjamin Long drove to the top of the Slieau Freoaghane peak damaging an extensive area of heathland which is home to endangered species like Hen Harriers and Red Grouse.

 

He was given a £1000 fine, points on his licence and has to pay court costs.

 

Minister Geoffrey Boot says these types of offences are notoriously difficult to detect and prosecute.

 

He hopes the substantial fine sends out a message that these types of incidents are taken very seriously.
