Supermarkets on the Isle of Man are pleading with customers to refrain from panic buying.
Some stores have already put a limit on quantites of certain products.
Major operators on the Island including Tesco, Shoprite and M&S have signed a letter urging customers to shop responsibly and ensure supplies are shared out fairly.
The letter reads:
To our customers,
We know that many of you are concerned about how this new community transmission of Coronavirus (COVID-19) may affect the Isle of Man and in particular, how this may affect supplies of food, medicine, and household essentials.
As per last spring during our first lockdown, we, as retailers, have extensive plans in place to cover disruptions and to ensure that we can continue to supply our customers with the products they need. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company and our logistics providers have robust plans in place to cope with any impact on sailings and to ensure freight can be continuously carried. Although the measures being re-introduced today haven’t applied to the Isle of Man for the last six months, remember the United Kingdom has been in varying degrees of this situation for many months- supply chains are stable and we are continuing to work with suppliers to keep shelves restocked. We would like to once again thank our colleagues across retail and logistics who are working around the clock to deal with this repeat challenge.
With that in mind, we also require the support of our customers. We would like to reassure you that there is no disruption to the supply of essential goods as a result of either COVID-19 or Brexit, and shelves are being restocked as quickly as possible. For this reason, we would ask you to be considerate in your purchases so that everyone can get the products they need. There is plenty of supply to go around, but we do need you to shop normally – there is no need to stock up.
We would also like to reaffirm that wearing a face covering is not mandatory to enter an essential retail store, but is strongly recommended in such public places. Please be considerate that some people may be unable to wear a covering for personal medical reasons.
By shopping considerately, we can work together to keep our retail staff and customers safe, and ensure that everyone in the Isle of Man - including the most vulnerable members of our society - can continue to get what they need.
