Reckless fly-tippers face heavy fines

Wed, 17 Mar 2021

The Manx Government’s warning people caught fly-tipping can be fined up to £2500.

Since the start of lockdown, rubbish has been dumped illegally in some rural areas and the incidents are now being investigated by police.

Old furniture, waste from home renovations and glass bottles are among items fly-tipped at scenic spots like Eairy Cushlin and at Ballaugh in recent weeks.

The island’s four civic amenity sites are closed at the moment because of the latest lockdown but the government won’t take that as an excuse.

Infrastructure Minister Tim Baker says people using the current circuit breaker as time to carry out home improvements should store any waste until the tips reopen.

His views are shared by Environment Minister Geoffrey Boot who says such mindless acts will not be tolerated.

Mr Boot says not only is the dumping of rubbish in our countryside unsightly and unnecessary but it also presents a wider danger to roaming livestock and other wildlife.
