Police were 'threatening and intimidating' claims Laxey Bay swimmer

Wed, 24 Mar 2021

A swimmer has said police officers were 'threatening and intimidating' after being called to Laxey Bay earlier today.

Police were called to the bay at 6:20am following reports of a large group of people in the water.

Current Covid regulations outlined by the Manx Government allow for some outdoor exercise but police say they don't believe the rules were being followed in this case.

Posting on social media, one of the swimmers said: "To have the police turn up was also an experience. This is was unlawful and a direct attack on people. We were there to lawfully exercise and the enter water to combat mental health stress caused by lockdowns."

"They didn't carry out arrests but were threatening and intimidating. They broke the law claiming masks and social distancing must be adhered to, which is not a lawful order!"

In response, Isle of Man Constabulary said: "Several people have contacted us with information about the organiser of this gathering and provided names of people who were present. They will be spoken to in due course."

"We are aware of the organisers post relating to the reasons for this gathering being arranged."

"We recognise that at this time some people will be suffering with their mental health and we would encourage them to contact the support services available on island if they need additional help."

"It is also important to consider the wider picture in terms of the impact of COVID on our islands community, and the reasons for the current regulations being in place when we deal with incidents like these."
