Anger as planning consent approved to fell historic trees

Thu, 24 Jun 2021

A television presenter is among a number of people who have condemned plans to fell one of Europe’s last elm tree tunnels at St Marks.

The Manx Wildlife Trust has criticised the plans to fell the trees near the entrance to Ballavarvane Farm.

More than 50 trees could be felled to improve visibility along Braaid Road.

BBC presenter and naturalist Chris Packham described the plans as an 'absolute disgrace'. He said: "Whoever granted the permission should have a sit down and a rethink . This is a National natural treasure - not an inconvenience to be destroyed for a farm."

A petition against the plans has been signed by more than 8,000 people.
