Douglas Head could become a conservation area following an independent report into planning controls in the area.

It would see the region protected from ‘inappropriate alteration, development or demolition’.

Cabinet Office has not yet confirmed whether the proposals will be given the seal of approval.

The Battery Pier and Douglas Head Lighthouse are among the buildings that would be preserved.

Initially put forward in 2018, the suggestions have been amended after the Area Plan for the East was approved.

The report says Douglas Head has a ‘rich cultural evolution and mix of buildings’ that should be guarded against ‘inappropriate alteration, development or demolition in the future’.

Most changes would therefore require permission before work could get underway.

A public consultation is now open until mid-September for the public to have their say.
