A teaching union on the Isle of Man is calling for the government to invest in teachers' pay.
The NASUWT-The Teachers’ Union, hassubmitted a pay claim for 2021/22 to the Manx Government, arguing that teachers must be given a substantial, above inflation pay award.
The claim highlights that the pay of Manx teachers has fallen by almost 30% in real terms since 2010 and warns of the consequences for recruitment and retention of teachers in the Isle of Man if pay levels are not addressed.
Dr Patrick Roach, NASUWT General Secretary, said: “Manx teachers cannot continue to be subjected to a pay freeze imposed by an off-island Government.
“Teachers and school leaders have been affected by pay restraint to a much greater extent than colleagues in other jurisdictions, including in England, despite the same pay awards being imposed.
“Teaching as a career choice is falling further and further behind in terms of competitiveness on pay and this is contributing to a growing crisis in teacher supply in the Isle of Man.
“Salaries have been eroded during a period when workload has increased exponentially and when more and more is being expected of teachers.
“The importance of maintaining and investing in the teacher workforce has been starkly illustrated during the pandemic and ministers now need to demonstrate they recognise the value and necessity of providing teachers with a pay award which will support recruitment and retention and which reflects the hard work and skills of the profession.”
