Douglas Council further reduces waste collection service

Mon, 14 Mar 2022

Douglas Borough Council will only collect one wheelie bin per property from this autumn.

The announcement was made in last week’s sitting, where Councillor Falk Horning explained that since plans to introduce fortnightly collections were shared, some residents have been ‘panic-buying’ wheelie bins to increase their household waste capacity.

He said that as a result, the executive committee have decided that council will no longer be selling second wheelie bins to residents at a cost of around £50 per unit, but instead loaning them on a case-by-case basis, where an apparent need has been assessed and confirmed by officers.

Councillor Stephen Pitts recently received data obtained through a waste collection survey conducted by the authority in 2021, through a freedom of information request.

Councillor Horning says while the hard-line approach is designed to encourage people to give the new scheme a fair shot, options will be explored for residents with different needs, and there is plenty of time to request an assessment before the new service begins
around September.

Results show that more than half of the 995 people surveyed were against any changes to the current waste collection system; Mr Pitts thinks the authority have made a big mistake:
