Rare Humboldt penguin chick born at Curraghs
Mon, 25 Apr 2022
A rare Humboldt penguin chick has been born at the Curraghs Wildlife Park.
The park said 19 eggs have been laid this season.
The chick is being reared by its parents in a special nesting box, before it is large enough to venture out and meet the colony.
The species is classed as ‘vulnerable’ by the IUCN and is threatened in the wild by factors such as over-fishing and ocean pollution.
General Manager, Kathleen Graham, said: ‘The Park’s Humboldt penguin collection is part of an international breeding programme, so it is a very exciting time. We’ve had a staggering 19 eggs laid so more are expected to hatch in the coming days and weeks.'
