Public toilets in Castletown could close due to an ongoing dispute between the commissioners and the Department of Infrastructure.

 

The local authority offered to clean the toilets if they were refitted by the DoI, however the department says it will not do this because they are not a ‘required facility’ and therefore has ‘no other option but to close them’.

 

The facilities, which are located on Hope Street, are owned by the DoI but were leased out to the local authority which undertakes cleaning and minor maintenance.

 

In a statement on Facebook, Castletown Commissioners says they’ve been in contact with the department since August to try and keep the toilets open.

 

In response the DoI said:: “The Department of Infrastructure has been involved in ongoing discussions with Castletown Commissioners regarding the harbour toilets and the Chair of the Commissioners has not been ignored. 

 

“These discussions followed Castletown Commissioners giving the department notice to terminate the lease for the management of the facilities.

 

“A decision has been reached to close the toilets as the department is not in a position to maintain a cleaning programme at the current time. 

 

“The decision was also influenced by the presence of nearby alternative toilets which may be used by harbour users.”

 

Jamie Horton, Chair of Castletown Commissioners says it ‘beggars belief’ that they can’t sort something out.
