Paramedic rides with youth team to promote charity challenge

A paramedic from the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) has undertaken a cycle ride with the Isle of Man Youth League to help promote the charity’s ‘Race to the Base’ fundraising challenge.
The sponsored fitness event invites supporters to cover the distance GNAAS’ critical care team fly when returning to the charity’s Eaglescliffe airbase from key locations throughout the region the charity responds to.
The virtual challenge is open to everyone, and participants can choose to cover 32, 78, 130 or 380 miles between 1-31 May and can complete the distance any way they want, such as running, walking, cycling, or swimming.
Paramedic Lee Salmon is the team captain for the longest distance and has cycled, swam, and ran more than 100 miles so far as part
of the challenge since 1 May.
On Tuesday 9 May, he was joined by some of the Isle of Man Youth Cycling team to check off some of his miles, starting at the National Sports Centre, NSC in Douglas.
He said: “Race to the Base 2023 is back again and this year I’m thrilled to represent the new ‘supercharged’ 380-mile challenge, which covers our whole region and includes the distance flown when visiting the Isle of Man, the nearest major trauma centre, and returning to our North East airbase.
“I’m incredibly grateful to be able to visit the beautiful Isle of Man and whilst I’m here, take on some of the Race to the Base 2023 challenge with the athletes of the future. I hope we can inspire other individuals, groups, and businesses to get involved, improve their physical and psychological health, and help raise the funds we desperately need.”
GNAAS has been providing critical care in the Isle of Man for just over a year and has been called to 22 incidents on the Island in that time.
