In a turn of events from the announcement of Cummal Mooar to be decommissioned and no replacement to be provided in the near future, Lawrie Hooper MHK and the Minister for Health and Social Care is now “reassuring” current residents of the care home that it’s the Governments intention to build a replacement facility.
The MHK said that the residential home should remain open whilst this work is under way. He added that he “understands” the announcement and the future of the Manx Care facility has “caused concern” for residents, their families and communities in the north of the Island.
Hooper said: “The long-term plan for Cummal Mooar, which is over 40 years old, is to construct a replacement facility which will provide modern standards of social care for residents. The estimated cost for a new facility has grown considerably and as the Treasury has yet to approve funding, the original timescale has been pushed back.
“I want to reassure residents that it remains the Department of Health and Social Care’s intention to build a replacement for Cummal Mooar and it is the Department’s position that the facility should remain open while the Department, Manx Care and the Treasury work together to determine a plan for the future.”
The Ministers response follows on from Manx Care announcing only yesterday (July 27) that the care facility in Ramsey was to be decommissioned within the next two years and that no replacement would be built at present due to cost implications.
